Advanced D&D was the first roleplaying game most of us played. I probably should finish reading it one day.

Rummaging through some old files I found my copy of the Advanced D&D Dungeon Masters Guide. Back in the mid 1980’s this new roleplaying thing was all the rage so I picked up a copy. I enjoyed the concept of roleplaying but wanted more interactive story telling than skirmish wargaming in a fantasy setting.
So in 1985 I published the first edition of Hunter Planet.
Then in 1987 I published the 2nd Edition and released it a Cancon 1987 – 39 years ago. We negotiated hard for a spot in a hallway, taking up no official playable space. This was quite difficult as no-one wanted to play in the wide corridors so the organisers were reluctant to let us do so.
The first Hunter Planet demonstration games were quite successful with lots of players willing to sit down for a session and go on a little hunt while spectators wondered what all the laughter was about. Was that a real roleplaying game? There was too much laughter and stupid stuff going without checking of references and charts.
At Cancon 2026 we will be running demo games of Hunter Planet again. In today’s world we could not get away with running games in corridors, so we are part of the public Table Top Roleplaying Games area at the Snowy River Pavilion, next to the Quokka building. Find us at Table 24.
Or you will see one of us in costume walking around Cancon with free tickets!
It’s time for you to join us on a little hunt.
